How do I get there? All the group scenarios at the World Cup

As we enter the final games of the group stages, here are the scenarios for each team’s chances of advancing to the group stage.

Group A

Uruguay and Mexico sit 1-2 in the group with four points each; Uruguay is ahead on goal differential (plus-3 to plus-2). France lies third with one point, just ahead of hosts South Africa on goal difference (minus-2 to minus-3). Uruguay and Mexico play on the final day, as do South Africa and France.

Uruguay advances with: Win OR draw; loss AND draw between France and South Africa. Uruguay can lose and advance over the winner of the France-South Africa match based on goal difference or goals scored.

Uruguay wins group with: Win OR draw

Mexico advances with: Win OR draw; loss AND draw between France and South Africa; Mexico can lose and advance over the winner of the France-South Africa match based on goal difference or goals scored.

Mexico wins group with: Win

France advances with: Win AND loss by Uruguay OR Mexico AND advantage on goal difference with loser

South Africa advances with: Win AND loss by Uruguay OR Mexico AND advantage on goal difference with loser

Argentina leads the group with six points and a plus-4 goal difference. South Korea and Greece are tied with three points and a minus-1 goal differential each. South Korea leads based on goals scored (three to two). Nigeria lies fourth with zero points. Argentina plays Greece on the group’s final day, while Nigeria matches up with South Korea

Argentina advances with: Win OR draw; loss AND win or draw by Nigeria. Argentina can advance with loss AND win by South Korea based on goal difference or goals scored.

Argentina wins group with: Win OR draw

South Korea advances with: Better result against Nigeria than Greece against Argentina

South Korea wins group with: Win AND Argentina loss

Greece advances with: Better result against Argentina than South Korea against Nigeria

Greece wins group with: Win of three goals or more AND loss or draw by South Korea. If Greece and South Korea both win, they would be tied with Argentina on six points each and would go to goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head matchup, in that order.

Nigeria advances with: Win AND win by Argentina AND advantage on goal difference with Greece

Group C

Slovenia is the shock leader through two games with four points and a plus-1 goal difference. USA and England are second and third, respectively, with two points each; the USA holds the tiebreaker by virtue of goals scored (three to one). Algeria is fourth with one point. Algeria and USA face off on the final day of group play, while England and Slovenia also play.

Slovenia wins group with: Win; draw AND loss by USA; draw AND win by USA AND advantage on goal difference with USA

Algeria advances with: Win AND win or draw by Slovenia; win AND win by England AND advantage on goal difference with Slovenia

Group D

Ghana is tops in Group D with four points and a plus-1 goal difference. Germany and Serbia are tied with three points each, but Germany holds the edge on goal difference (plus-3 to zero). Australia is bottom with one point. Germany is pitted against Ghana on the final day, while Serbia faces Australia.

Group E

Netherlands has sealed its progress to the Round of 16 with two wins in two games. They have six points and a plus-3 goal difference. Japan and Denmark are tied with three points each; Japan holds the edge on goal difference (zero to minus-1). Cameroon has been eliminated, failing to pick up a point through two games. Japan and Denmark play in a winner-take-all match, while the Netherlands and Cameroon hook up in the final group game.

Slovakia advances with: Win AND win or draw by Paraguay; win AND win by New Zealand AND advantage on goal difference with Paraguay

If both games end in draws of the same score, progress would be determined by a coin flip between Italy and New Zealand

Group G

Brazil has sealed its spot in the next round with six points from their first two games. Portugal is in prime position with four points and a seemingly-unassailable plus-7 goal difference. Ivory Coast is a long shot to qualify after just one point from two matches. North Korea has been eliminated after coming up empty from two matches. Brazil and Portugal lock horns in a crucial match, while Ivory Coast has North Korea.

Group H

Spain and Switzerland are tied with three points each, and, while Switzerland holds the head-to-head advantage, Spain is ahead on goal difference (one to zero). Honduras is still alive despite failing to pick up a point so far. Honduras squares off with Switzerland in the final group fixtures, while Spain meets Chile.
