“This is SportsCenter” commerical of the week: Spinoffs

Mondays are always tough to deal with, as evidenced by my inability to get this post (and many others) up on schedule.

So to spirit away some of that new week malaise, I’ll be digging deep into the outer reaches of YouTube for yesteryear’s best entries in the most important sports marketing campaign the Western world has ever known: the two-decade behemoth “This is SportsCenter”.

We go pretty old school for today’s entry to 1997, which seems like a heck of a distance away, for the “Spinoffs” spot. The irony of this commercial is stunning. The safe dropped on the head of cartoon Keith Olbermann is an event millions of Americans would love to see replicated on flesh and blood Keith Olbermann. It’s easy to foresee a drunken binge for the betrayed Billy the Marlin. And ESPN, for as much as it joked, has launched more spinoffs and other original programming than Robin Roberts probably ever though possible a decade and a half ago. How much worse could “SportsCenter The Movie” be than “SportsNation”?
