“This is SportsCenter” commercial of the week: Shue for Steiner

Mondays are always tough to deal with, especially if you’re the soon-to-be-former New York Giants head coach and any of their, shall we say, disillusioned fans.

So to spirit away some of that new week malaise, I’ll be digging deep into the outer reaches of YouTube for yesteryear’s best entries in the most important sports marketing campaign the Western world has ever known: the two-decade behemoth “This is SportsCenter”.

Today’s entry digs deep into posterity, featuring your father’s primetime television days (and anchors) with a spot staring Melrose Place’s Andrew Shue, who gets traded to SportsCenter in one of the steals of the decade in exchange for “new poolboy, Bobby” Charlie Steiner. In Shue, the ESPN bigwigs picked a strong candidate, someone who played professional soccer in the U.S. and Zimbabwe to go along with his acting career.
