Wayne Rooney’s wonder goal wins Manchester Derby

I’m not one to engage in historic hyperbole when it comes time to sporting accomplishments.

But it’s not an exaggeration to call Wayne Rooney’s bicycle kick goal against Manchester City Saturday one of the best ever. It’s not just the immense personal skill — Rooney’s ability to adjust mid-air to the deflected cross from Nani and deliver a one-in-a-million shot into the upper 90 is utterly sublime.

The circumstances of the strike only magnify its significance. It broke a tie late in a pivotal Premier League contest. It gave the Red Devils an emotional win in front of the rabid thousands of red-clad Mancunians in the increasingly contentious Manchester Derby. It was part of the redemption story of Rooney, who’s overcome personal issues and struggled to regain form all season, in what he called his greatest goal ever. And it could be the signature moment and potentially the most vital contribution to another Manchester United English Premier League title. Cheers, Wayne.
