A crazy return to London for Lehmann

There are few games in the world that don’t involve NCAA basketball or drinking that matter right now.

But I just wouldn’t feel right allowing a certain piece of news to fly by uncommented on.

That of course is the return to the pitch of the great Jens Lehmann, who at 41 years old is returning between the sticks at Arsenal.

With preferred keepers Wojciech Szczesny, Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone injured and no one in London wanting Manuel Almunia to guard as much as an open seat at the Emirates Stadium, Lehmann has abruptly ended his nine-month retirement to don the gloves once again.

Despite the approval of (what I can only assume are half-soused) Arsenal fans on Twitter, I don’t see a whole lot of sense in the move beyond getting to enjoy whatever lunacy he perpetrates over the next few months.

Let’s review. There were his spats with Didier Drogba (love the music on the video) not to mention with angry German fans. There’s his ongoing rivalry with Almunia, who he thought helped hasten his exit from London. He’s made a few head-scratching plays on the pitch. And there’s the whole peeing during a match thing.

With an extra couple years of insanity under his belt, there’s no telling what kinds of cantankerous, you-kids-get-off-my-lawn shenanigans he has up his sleeves.

My guess: he’ll play an entire game with his back to the playing field. Can’t wait to see it happen.
